Sustainability Specialists support and implement programs that focus on improving the environment and green building practices, saving money for their employer, and helping their local community and the environment.
A Sustainability Specialist combines business expertise and knowledge of the green buildings and energy efficiency industry to determine how businesses can operate in a way that is less impactful on our environment. They develop sustainability goals, objectives, initiatives, and strategies for a business or organization to meet. Sustainability Specialists consider factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and work-place acceptance. They will also provide technical or administrative support for sustainability programs or issues; monitor or track sustainability indicators such as energy usage, natural resource usage, waste generation, and recycling; research or review regulatory, technical, or market issues related to sustainability; and review and revise sustainability proposals or policies. Once actions are implemented, Sustainability Specialists evaluate the results and impact. Sustainability Specialists also implement employee training programs related to their programs and initiatives.
