Residential Building Code Officials visit and confirm that existing or newly constructed residential structures are safe, structurally sound, and in compliance with federal and local codes, contractual specifications, and zoning laws. Code Officials who have specialized knowledge in green building design and construction are able to quickly assess those features to determine that workers have installed them safely and as designed for a high-performance, green building. Code Officials with green building expertise are also well versed in "green" building codes and standards and can quickly determine their applicability. In general, Residential Building Code Officials may evaluate building plans, inspect construction sites and finished homes, issue citations, and provide corrective advice. In addition to local municipalities, Code Officials may be self-employed or work on staff for architectural or engineering firms.
